The Dark Side: Autumn Jordon

The Dark Side aims to shed light on that deep, dark, mysterious side of an author, a face that she rarely, if ever, shows to the public. What secret is she hiding behind that enigmatic smile on her official photo (if any)? what juicy tidbit is she keeping from the world? What are some of the things that she liked, things we would never know, because it's not part of her bio?

Today, we have with us AUTUMN JORDON, author of EVIL'S WITNESS (ebook, print), who regaled us in a previous post with some fun facts about her book and an exclusive excerpt. Check out our review of Evil's Witness.

Remember, think dark, dark, dark...

Do you believe in ghosts and supernatural phenomenon? Have you ever had a close encounter? Do tell us about it.
Sure, I believe in spirits. A few years ago, my DH and I visited Gettysburg. While standing on a spot where a sniper had died, my leg shook uncontrollably. When I stepped off the spot it stopped. I stepped back on and it started again. I had this eerry feeling. The next year we stopped by the spot again and this time I couldn’t move or breathe. It was like a huge weight sat on my chest. My DH had to pull me off the rock. I always wondered if the solider was related to me somehow.

Are you afraid of the dark? Why or why not?
No. I lived in the country and there are a lot of noises outside after dark, but I’m familiar with them. I love going out and watching the moon and stars. Even in a blizzard is neat to watch the snow blasting at you. If I was outside my element, I might be.

Imagine that for some reason, your lights suddenly went out! What would be the first thing you’d do or say?
This has happened, once for six days. First word, AWESOME! I loved it. The kids had to learn to entertain themselves without tech devices and since it was winter, DH and I cuddled a little closer.

What is the most romantic thing your husband/SO/date has done under the cover of darkness?
He gave me a massage, scalp to toes. It was wonderful.

How did you overcome a particular dark time in your life?
We all have dark times in our lives. I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life 15 years ago, and I did it with prayer. I believe in spirits and angels. I believe there is a God and he does listen. He might not answer our prayers in the way we think he should, but he does.
Lightning Round.

Exclusive Peek and Giveaway: A Rogue's Pleasure by Hope Tarr

From Hope Tarr:

Exclusive Excerpt:

Standing before him, she caught a whiff of the cool, clean scent of his shaving soap. The urge to let her fingertips trace the hard line of his freshly shaven jaw was so strong that, to be safe, she jammed her free hand inside her trouser pocket.

"I really should be going." Her voice held remarkably steady for a woman whose insides were churning.

He released her with a show of reluctance. "I had hoped you might stay to join me in a light supper."

Shocked, she crammed the hand he'd just released into her other pocket. "I'm afraid that is out of the question."

"Don't tell me that you've already eaten?" His face registered disappointment.

She was about to answer "yes" when her stomach betrayed her with a loud rumble.

He grinned. "I think not." Hand on her elbow, he steered her toward the door. "But we can remedy that."

She halted. "Lord Montrose, I don't think dining with you would be wise."

"Why not?" he asked, expression bland.

Was he mocking her? Annoyed, she answered through pursed lips, "I should think that would be obvious. I came tonight only to return the necklace I--" she faltered "--stole from you. I am hardly an invited guest."

He opened the study door and held it. "That is for me to decide."

Chelsea hesitated. To accept his invitation would be to chart a perilous course. But over the past twenty-four hours, her body seemed to have developed a will of its own. She laid her fingers atop his, butterflies dancing in her stomach. He linked his long fingers through hers, and her hand disappeared in his warm grasp.

"You needn't fear discovery." His other hand on her back, he guided her through the sconce-lit hallway. "I have dismissed the staff for the night, including Chambers."

Recalling the frail, black-clad old man she'd seen answering Anthony's front door the day before, she asked, "I gather Chambers is your butler?"

"My uncle's butler." He paused, then amended, "My butler now, I suppose. Fellow must be in his eighties. He's blind as a bat and creaks like carriage springs when he walks, but I haven't the heart to retire him."

A sliver of light showed beneath ornately carved double doors. Releasing her hand, Anthony opened them and led her inside a large dining room with cream-colored walls, emerald velvet drapes, and plush carpet patterned in hues of cream and jade. The faint smell of fresh paint hovered. The night before, she hadn't stopped to admire the chamber's beauty, but now she found her gaze straying. Roundels depicting scenes from classical mythology dotted the intricate plasterwork ceiling. Flames flickered in the wall sconces above a burl walnut sideboard laden with food.

Lord Montrose stood in the center of the room, the pride of possession shining from his brown eyes. "Do you like it? It's one of the few rooms in this mausoleum that comes close to being habitable."

Habitable, indeed. Chelsea thought of the shabbiness of Oatlands, Robert's legacy—assuming he survived—and her heart tugged. Rotting woodwork and a leaking roof, veritable calamities a few weeks before, were now the very least of her worries.

Aware of her host watching her, expectant, she suppressed a sigh and answered, "It's splendid. The most beautiful room I've ever seen."

"I'm glad you approve." He led her to the end of the long table where two places had been set, a brace of candles between them. "Right now, the thing I like best about this room is that there's no one here but you and I." He pulled out a shield-back chair. "So, you see, you shall be quite safe."

Safe? Alone in a chamber veiled in candlelight and shadows with an unrepentant rake and a brain brimming with foolish fantasies, Chelsea had never felt less safe in her life.

Everything about the room and the man standing in its center radiated romance.

Wanting to clear the air before matters got out of hand, she said, "I should tell you that, if you're planning to seduce me, you're wasting your time."

He smiled his mesmerizing smile. "I appreciate your candor, Lady Robin. Now that you've broached the subject, I must confess that the thought had crossed my mind, but I assure you that I shall respect your wishes. I meant what I said last night, that it is not my custom to force my attentions where they are unwanted." He gestured toward the sideboard. "But it would be a pity for all this to go to waste, don't you agree?"

Disarmed, Chelsea found herself returning his smile. "The toast I had for breakfast does seem rather a long time ago."
His smile broadened. "Even fierce knights of the road have to eat. Besides," he added, his connoisseur's gaze sweeping over her, "You look like someone who could benefit from a good meal."

She surrendered with a grimace, slipping into the chair he held out. "After such a gracious invitation, how could I possibly refuse?"

She might have no designs on Lord Montrose, romantic or otherwise, but she was woman enough to wish for something pretty to wear. And to think Robert had always cared for clothes far more than she had. How smart he'd looked in his uniform, the creases of his spotless white trousers ironed as sharp as knife blades. Imagining how bedraggled and filthy he must be by now—if, indeed, he still lived—she felt tears burn the backs of her eyes.

Fortunately Lord Montrose had moved to the sideboard, affording her a moment to compose herself.

"Sending the staff to bed does have one disadvantage, namely, that we shall have to fend for ourselves. This is my first time waiting at table, so you'll have to bear with me."

A bottle of wine had been left to decant. Slinging a napkin over his arm, he carried it to the table.

"Reputedly a very fine red bordeaux. I hope 'tis to milady's liking."

He gave a servile bow before bending to pour, and Chelsea couldn't help but smile. How charming he was, how amusing.

He stepped back. Awaiting her verdict, his dark eyes glinted with mischief. His playfulness was contagious, and Chelsea found her mood lightening. Falling in with the game, she swirled the liquid around her glass before raising the rim to her lips.

"It is rather... wonderful."

Reminding herself that red wine always gave her the headache, she set down the goblet. She couldn't afford a muzzy head tomorrow just as she couldn't afford to become tipsy in his lordship's presence. He'd promised he wouldn't force himself on her, and she trusted him to keep his word.

Herself she trusted far less.

GUEST POST and GIVEAWAY: Weighing in on...Erotic Romance

by Hope Tarr
Website

As a Libran, I’m obsessed with balance or at least the illusion of it. “I feel so out-of-balance,” I’ve been known to lament—okay, whine—notably during the last few weeks of a deadline.

But as we know, a perfect balance rarely if ever exists. As the late great Gilda Radner said in one of her popular comic personas, Rosanna Rosanna Danna, “If it’s not one thing, it’s another.”

Indeed.

I’ve been a proud member of Romance Writers of America since 1997 and on moving to New York, one of the first things I did was join the RWA/New York City Chapter. How glad I am that I did!

Among the benefits of membership is a monthly newsletter and the theme of the August issue was erotica. The editor for the issue, a friend of mine, asked me to give a quote on what erotica means to me. What the heck does erotica mean to me? For the first time in a very long time I hit a stumbling block, dare I say “writer’s block.”

As a writer of steamy if not exactly erotic fiction—though as one reviewer rightly pointed out, THE TUTOR definitely cuts it close—I also know that sometimes imbalance can be…intriguing. So long as the shift doesn’t swing too far in one direction. So long as it swings far enough.

In my July Blaze Historical, THE TUTOR, the heroine, Lady Bea Lindsey, approaches her brother-in-law’s private secretary and former East London street rogue, Ralph Sylvester on the night her engagement to another man, a very nice but apparently sexually clueless gentleman, is announced.

“I wish for you to tutor me in…sex,” she says and to dispel any doubts, she slides off her red velvet cape beneath which she is wearing absolutely nothing.

There’s something simultaneously titillating and empowering about a young Victorian woman, a lady, taking control of her sexuality and more broadly, her life.

In MY LORD JACK, my July 12th single-title historical reissue with Carina Press, my heroine, French émigré, Claudia Valemont, likewise takes charge of shall we say…the situation. Only unlike Ralph, the object of her desire, Scotsman, Jack Campbell is…a virgin. And Claudia is an experienced woman, a former courtesan. Erotic? You be the judge.

So I suppose for me good erotica, like good sex, is always about the delicate dance between the partners, the subtle and not so subtle shifts in passion and power, in tenderness and lust; the advances, retreats, and yes, submissions; the glorious imbalances that comprise any relationship, be it a long term love affair or a single sexy night.

Wishing you an end-of-summer filled with the “perfect” balance of naughty and nice.

Hope

Exclusive Peek: Evil's Witness by Autumn Jordon

From Autumn Jordon:

Let me throw two lines at you. Life is stranger than fiction, no truer words have ever been stated, and life is filled with drama and drama is what makes good fiction. Do you see the connection?

Many threads of my new release, EVIL’S WITNESS, are based on actual occurrences, such as my heroine’s, divorce and harassment from her ex-cop husband, a tractor-trailer targeted by the mafia, an infiltration of a government agency by an outsider and two people meeting under dire circumstances and falling in love.

You want to know where writers get their ideas for their stories, look at your life. If you’ve ever grabbed the aspirin bottle or shed a tear, you’ve had drama in your life. My son is getting married in a few months. Here we have the mingling of two families. Have you ever seen that scenario in a book or on the big screen? Sure you have—Romeo and Juliet or My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I have family serving this country and the stories they can share with me cause me to tremble. The Green Zone comes to my mind.

Life is real. By reading we learn the drama of others and put ourselves into their shoes, or we escape our own drama and get whisked away into other world where our drama doesn’t seem as bad.

Here is a little drama from EVIL’S WITNESS. I hope you enjoy.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Gene aimed his gun at Victor. “You’re not going to hurt them. If you try, you’ll have to go through me.”

Victor’s spine stiffened. His glare smoldered like an enraged Satan.

The urge to turn and run made Stephanie quake inside. She knew running was no longer a possibility. Gene couldn’t take on all of them. They’d be gunned down within seconds.

“Don’t be stupid, son.” Morse put up his hand.

“Shut up. I’m not your son, and I’m not going to let them hurt Stephanie and my kids.” Determination made Gene’s tone dangerous.

She stared at the back of the man she’d once loved with her whole heart and had hated with her whole heart. He stood tall with his shoulders squared. He was laying his life on the line for Bobby and Em. And for her.

Gene was doing his part to save their children. She had to do hers.

The shadow crawled on his knees toward the embankment.

Mac’s and Dog’s full attention was on Gene.

If she kept herself in between the men and the kids, maybe, just maybe her children would live. She couldn’t think about her fate or Gene’s.

She inhaled and let Em slip to the ground, keeping her close while Gene’s stand against the man began to heat.

She squeezed Bobby’s small hand. He looked up at her; fear dulled his beautiful blue eyes. She nodded toward the back of the trailer and motioned with her hand for them to stay below the high grass. She mouthed, car. Behind her back she pulled them together and placed Em’s hand in Bobby’s. She waved them off, hoping Bobby and Em wouldn’t run but would back away slowly while she and Gene distracted their enemies.

Somehow she had to help Gene and draw attention away from them. Taking a deep breath, Stephanie swallowed her fear, gathered her nerve and pulled her flashlight from her belt.

“Gene’s right,” she said loudly, stepping forward. Her legs shook with each step, but she kept moving away from Bobby and Em. “You can trust me. I won’t say a word.”

She reached out and touched Gene’s arm. He didn’t look her way, but she knew by the way he leaned slightly into her touch that they were making their peace with each other for the sake of their children. “We didn’t see a thing. And we won’t tell anyone.”

“I don’t want to kill no kids, Victor.” Mac danced in place ready to dodge Victor’s wrath.

“You will do as I say,” Victor snapped.

She looked at the dead driver. His lifeless stare pleaded to her for justice.

“Don’t trust her,” Sheriff Morse ordered, turning his gun on her.

Stephanie refused to flinch under Morse’s scrutiny.

Gene moved in front of her. “Frank, what the hell are you doing? You’ve known Stephanie all her life.”

“There is too much at stake, Gene. She saw me kill that guy. I’m not going to jail.” Morse’s tongue skimmed his lips. “Why the hell are you trying to protect her anyway? You two have been fightin’ like junkyard dogs for years. You complain every day she’s milking you dry. This is your chance to be rid of your mistakes.”

“Steph was never a mistake to me,” Gene’s voice rose in response. Then it softened. “I was hers.”

Tears threatened to blur her vision and she blinked them away. She squeezed Gene’s arm and glanced at her ex-husband’s profile. He remained focused.

“Touching,” Victor said. “But, sorry, no. They must die here.”

REVIEW: Evil's Witness by Autumn Jordon

ISBN 1601547358
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romantic Suspense
(c) June 2010, Wild Rose Press
Autumn Jordan's Website

Rating: 4 stars

Available at Wild Rose Press (ebook), (print).

This book has it all! From murders to lust and tension in their most extreme forms, to traitors and backstabbing, mystery and action-packed suspense, drama and high emotions, depression and happiness, and a hot romance strung throughout.

Agent John Dolton is an emotionally distressed FBI agent. His problems contain heartbreaking stories of loss in his personal life and in his career. He is assigned to a new case in which the Department of Treasury trucks are being hijacked and the cargo stolen. An unfortunate event at one of these heists gives him the very fortunate opportunity to meet Ms. Stephanie Boyd and her two adorable children who witnessed the heist and consequently, had spent the night in hell.

The absolute horrible thing about the particular heist that Stephanie and her kids witnessed is that it hits close to home. Gene, Stephanie's ex-husband, is somehow involved in this hijacking plot, and the Zosimosky family (the bad guys) wants Stephanie and her children dead when it was known that they were witnesses. After escaping the heist, Stephanie goes straight to the local police department where Agent Dolton comes to question her later that morning. There is instant attraction between them and even a dose of fear as Stephanie gives the details of her horrific night. Stephanie is clearly on edge and scared for her and her children's lives, and Agent Dolton can see it.

Stephanie knows that she can identify the man who was obviously in charge of the heist that she witnessed. She informs Agent Dolton and he decides to transport Stephanie and her children to a safe house. The transport goes awry and Agent Dolton knows that someone has leaked the information of the transport to the wrong people, those who are out to get Stephanie and her kids. Stephanie escapes a near deadly shoot out in a parking lot and agrees to meet John later at a new location.

Things go well for a while at the safe house, but as the story progresses and Stephanie goes through files and files of pictures of possible suspects, Agent Dolton starts to figure out that some things just don't add up and he's not sure how the Zosimosky family is getting the information about him and the family he has to protect. As John's personal story comes out, the romance starts to unfold.

The romance is very apparent as the characters of Stephanie Boyd and John Dolton interact. Stephanie is the first woman to cause a rise in John since his wife. Given that they are living through traumatic experience after traumatic experience together, the tension mounts and mounts and mounts until finally Stephanie is tired and wants to forget about it all. It is a beautiful love story that happens very fast, not that that counts against it, but given the whole situation, it is very believable. Agent Dolton and the children even have a love story that grows as the story progresses. It is very cute and the reader will be rooting for the story to be resolved in a way that they can all be together as a happy family.

The descriptions of the places that the characters go to are short, but worded perfectly so that you get the full effect. They were shown, not told to the reader, so the reader doesn't get bored reading a whole page full of unimportant descriptions. The characters actually spoke about their surroundings and the details flowed marvelously, creating an eerie mountain highway at night, a cabin by a lake with a view to die for, and a quaint small town. Even the descriptions of the characters and smaller settings were woven throughout the story with attention-grabbing prose.

The dialogue in this book was very well-written and thought out. I felt as though I was right there with the characters listening to them talk. It takes extreme talent to master dialogue, especially given that some of them happen during periods of intense stress and plenty of suspense.

As far as reccomendations go, everyone should give this book a go. I read it in two sittings; I just didn't want to put it down. Any contemporary romance reader who reads this book will love it and be asking Autumn Jordan, "When are we going to get more books from you?"

Sheer genius. Nalini Singh writes with amazing skill as she depicted the delicate balance of the growing attraction between the woman who cannot be touched and the man who aches to do so. By page 70 of this book, there are already several poignant scenes between the main couple that would tug at your heartstrings and make you root for an HEA for them. But most especially for Sophia Russo, who just about breaks me whenever I think about her past and her life, what it meant to be a J Psy.

Sophia Russo is a Justice Psy, able to walk the twisted pathways of the criminals' minds and retrieve the needed memories to take them to justice. However, this exerts a great toll on her shields. Though she goes in every now and then for reconditioning (strengthening her shields), she's nearing the point where she'll crack and go insane, when no amount of reconditioning would help and and then, her personality--her very self--would be erased and it will be as if she never was. As a Psy, they are trained not to feel, but each moment spent with Max Shannon, a detective, as they work together on a case made her shields crack that little more. Skin contact may be normal to us, but to Sophia, each touch is magnified a thousand-fold and threatens her shield. Yet, she didn't hesitate. If she'd go, then she wanted to go knowing how Max felt against her skin.

To Sophia, her near eventual demise was real, and to the reader, it felt real. There were some real touching scenes that blurred my eyesight, and I'd like to quote one of them, though it would probably be out of context to those who haven't read this and thus, wouldn't be able to grasp the richness of the emotion behind the words:

"Max?"
"Yes?"
"Will you remember me?"
His heart broke into a thousand pieces. "Always."

I couldn't remember a couple who fought as fiercely and desperately for their HEA as Sophia and Max. It seems like every chapter contains some new information that contributed to the growing conviction of Sophia's eventual demise and how Max couldn't bear to lose her. I don't know how I was able to hold on to my will not to turn to the end of the book and have a peek. But I managed. Somehow.

Though I know some miracle would happen to bring about Sophia's HEA with Max (this is a romance, after all), at the moment of reading, I could believe there's no hope anywhere for Sophia, that she's probably going to have one intimate, glorious moment with Max and then she'd die. That's how powerful Nalini Singh's writing is. I can feel Sophia's fragile state like a tangible object. I think it's in the careful way Sophia holds herself, the way she takes care not to touch anybody, and also in the way Max acts around her, the way his thoughts contrast with his actions. There is so much feeling going on on both sides, but because of Sophia's condition, these feelings are controlled and subdued, repressed. This, coupled with the murders that Sophia and Max are taxed to solve and the build-up regarding Sophia's end fate, increased the tension and page-turning quality of the book.

As for Max, early on in their acquaintance, somehow, Sophia was able to touch something in him that no woman had ever done. He didn't know what to make of it, but he did know he was attracted to her. Recognizing her fragility as a J Psy, he didn't rush her, willing himself to slow down, to go at her pace, to introduce her to sensual delights at each opportunity. Not only that, but he also acquainted her with the light teasing that exists between (would-be) lovers and all the other stuff that Sophia missed in her childhood. I like that Max is sensitive in this manner, that he was willing to wait and to meet Sophia at her level. And, of course, he wouldn't accept Sophia's eventual demise without a fight. He wanted to make it so that she was his to keep forever. Like all heroes, this fierce protectiveness he has toward the heroine just about makes me melt.

"I know who you are," he said, holding her gaze. "I'm not going to be scared away because of your 'imperfections'."
A sheen of wet in her eyes, turning the midnight irridescent.
"We fit, you and I," he whispered, looking into that haunting gaze. "Two broken pieces making a whole." It wasn't the most romantic of statements, but it was torn from his soul. "I am not losing you."

And--

"No one will dare hit on me after I mention my wife is a J with a jealous streak."
Wife. Her composure splintered. "Max, no matter what, we could never--"
"I told you, Sophie. You're mine. End of story."

No games. I thought it was heartbreaking when Sophia confessed she didn't know how to play games like how the woman was playing with Max (a woman they'd met in the elevator flirted with him and gave him her card), and also when Max decided that yes, he would pursue this attraction between them to the end and there would be no games between them. Just honest emotions and frank speaking.

I also haven't seen a couple who loved each other as Max and Sophia. Their intimate scenes are hot and steamy, sure, but there's more than lust and attraction. Though the word love may never have slipped past their lips, but you could see it in the other words that they do say, the way they care for one another, the way they take care of the other, the way they're willing to die for the other, the way...Argh! You have to read this book!

And I hadn't even talked about the worldbuilding yet. Astounding, complex, superb. I could believe such a world existed. It was that real.

Regarding how Sophia became well again, I don't believe I know enough of this world yet to judge with any knowledge whether it was believable or not. Certainly, for me, at this point, it is. It didn't feel like the solution came from out of the blue. There had been hints as the story progressed, but the realization came at the end.

Sascha and Lucas (from the first book) make an appearance here, due to Sascha's connection to Councilor Nikita Duncan, the councilor who needed Max's and Sophia's help on a case. I think fans would enjoy seeing this couple together and be updated on how their romance has progressed. I certainly enjoyed seeing the dynamics of Lucas's pack as they relate to Sascha, as well as other characters like Dorian, Clay, Faith and Vaughn.

Bonds of Justice is the first book I've read in Nalini Singh's Psy/Changeling series, and I can assure first-time readers that you won't get lost at all if you start here! This book is totally stand-alone, yet I'm sure you'll feel as I do--I'm going to read this series in order, starting with Slave to Sensation (the first book which features Sascha and Lucas) all the way to Bonds of Justice (again!) to get the full flavor of Ms. Singh's world and her amazing characters.
