About Kate Perry:
- I'm a Master in the art of Kung Fu San Soo. Plain and simple, I kick ass.
- I teach, lots of different things. Against my will. Sigh. I don't love teaching—at least the prep work involved—but the universe seems to want me to do it. Some of my current topics: tai chi, kung fu, the occasional gym class, writing, and cooking (to friends).
- I'm a social butterfly. Going out? Dancing? Dinner with friends? I'm so there.
I was so charmed by this essay that Kate has written that I have to share it with you!
Interview with a Guardian
When I met Gabrielle Sansouci, I was, uh, surprised. I knew she was a Guardian--one of the only five Guardians in the entire world who kept the mystic Scrolls of Destiny from the hands of mere mortals. I pictured--well, let's just say I pictured someone a little different than this woman who sat down next to me.
And I think she noticed my goggling expression, because before I could introduce myself, she grinned, and said, "Kind of disappointing, isn't it?"
Hardly. She was hot. Tall and lithe, the perfect mix of Chinese and French. Casual in jeans that molded to her. But funky, with blue streaks in her long black hair. I wondered how the bright color would look in my hair.
And, of course, I made a great first impression. "Are your eyes really blue or are they contacts?"
She laughed as she took off her jacket. "Is that an official question, or are you building up to it?"
Oh right. The interview. I cleared my throat and looked down at the list of questions in my lap. "So, Gabrielle--"
"Call me Gabe." She wrinkled her nose. "Only my father calls me Gabrielle."
Frowning, I scanned my notes. "I thought your father was dead?"
"Oh." She shifted uncomfortably, her brow furrowed with three fine lines. "Right."
Strange. But I shrugged and got on with it. "I understand you're a Guardian of Destiny. Can you tell me--"

Kate,
Have you ever been in a store and found someone browsing through your books?
I haven't read this series yet, so it looks like I have some catching up to do!

My question for Kate: What do you like best about writing paranormal romance?
I'm a GFC follower, and I posted a link to this giveaway on my little blog:

Woo hoo! Thanks for having me here today, peeps!
Hey Cindy! I *have* been in a store and seen someone looking at my books, but I'm still waiting to catch someone reading one on the metro or someplace. (Yes, I'm TOTALLY taking a picture when that happens.)
Lindy, what I like best about writing my series is the action. I get a large amount of pleasure asking one of the guys in my kung fu class to help me "brainstorm" the scenes. It usually involves them coming at me with fists, knives, guns, etc and me kicking their ass. ;)
I follow on GFC.
Do you prefer to write series or stand alone books?

Where is your favorite place to read and do you prefer coffee or tea?
Series or stand alone? Series--definitely. I like having the former characters show up. It's like old friends coming to visit.
Favorite place to read: in bed, or curled up in a blanket on a cushy couch.
Coffee or tea: what--wine isn't an option? ;)
I wake up fully alert (too alert, I'm told) so I don't need a kick to get started, but I do like a milky coffee while I write (large cup of milk with a soupcon of coffee). Milky coffee is a Pavlovian signal for me to get to work. Otherwise I drink tea.
How many books do you hope to have in this series?

Hi, Kate! Congrats on "Tempted by Fate"! Great title and great cover featuring the gorgeous Paul Marron! Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance is based on a harsher, darker world with escalated drama and violence. The heightened tension leads to more intense sensual situations. All of these elements combine for a knockout punch, but they have to handled just right to avoid overkill and remain readable. One feature of Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance that really appeals to me is the natural evolution of strong, kick-booty female characters! You seem to be the embodiment of one of your own heroines : )

Congrats to Kate on the new release. I look forward to reading Kate's books.

How many books would you like, elaing8? ;)
Hey Virginia! Really the series was born because I wanted to write fighting scenes, so it might be more accurate to say my heroines embody me. ;) I've been practicing kung fu for 14 years or so.
Thanks Jane! Hope you enjoy TEMPTED.
This is awesome! Wow to your answer for Elaing8's question. I think I am interested to know how many are going to be in this series!!!
Please include me in!!! Please!

Great book covers, but only one with a heroine. Do you prefer the covers with or without?

Wow. I'm so happy your third book is out! I picked it up today (no need to enter me in the contest!). Kate--are you secretly a Guardian? And if you are, can I be next? I can tattoo a mark on my body somewhere.
Wait--Cecile, will you adopt me so I can be a Smutty Hussy too?
Robin, I prefer covers that look good. :) Seriously though, I don't really care as long as the person on the cover doesn't look completely different than the character he/she is supposed to represent.
Parisa, no you can't be a Guardian. But you can be my sidekick.
Hi! Congrats on your new release!
Are all three books set in San Francisco?

Sidekick? Hmph.
Yes, Sheree, all the books are set in San Francisco. Though the first little bit of CHOSEN is set in LA.
Parisa: as a sidekick you get to wear boots and a cape.
Hi, Kate.
What is your opinion on book trailers? Do you think they help in book sales?

Do sidekicks have shorter capes? And what kind of boots? Are you interviewing for sidekicks only or are there minions involved?
Hey, Kate, thanks a lot for dropping by! Your book sounds awesome. The series is going into my TBR pile! :)
I can't enter the contest, and I'm just naturally curious. For someone who loves PNR books and is new to your series, what can you say is different about your Guardians and what's out there?
Thanks!
I follow you on GFC! And for Kate, I just started reading "Marked for Passion", and I am loving it! I totally love the way you write! Thank you!

Sheree, dude, I totally have minions. But I'm willing to take on a sidekick (which is several steps up) as long as he/she qualifies and has style. I'm open to all cape lengths and boot types.
Carole, you're a smart woman for adding the Guardian series to your TBP. ;) They're different, for one, in that there are no vampires or shapeshifters--or any type of normal paranormal creature.
Joann, you, too, are a very smart and discerning woman. ;) I hope you love CHOSEN and TEMPTED as well.
These are new to me books, but they sound very good. I'm adding them to my wishlist.

Hi Kate, I haven't read your books yet, but I am going to.
I was just wondering if you have thought about putting any recipes on your site? I love to cook, as much as I love to read and I am always looking for new recipes.

Hey DL! Recipes, huh? I hadn't ever considered it, mostly because I cook intuitively so my recipes would be like "heat some oil until there's one plume of smoke and then add enough garlic to repel a vampire at a hundred paces." But then maybe it would work. Let me think about this. I'd LOVE to write a cooking-centric series--then I'd definitely include recipes.
Um, I've gotten everyone's questions so far, right? If I missed you, or you have something you're DYING to know, ask me. For real. I'm friendly. :)
I always lvoe to know authors favorite musicals. :)
And I follow on gfc.

Um... I break out in a severe rash at just the thought of seeing a musical.
No wait! I love The Sound of Music (the movie). That does count? Have I redeemed myself? Something about Julie Andrews singing about the hills alive with the sound of music gets me every time. Plus there are puppets.
